Restoration of the Mosaic in the Antechamber of the Cave

The Barcelona Provincial Council has contributed to the conservation and restoration of the mosaic on the floor of the Antechamber of the Cave of Saint Ignatius, a space of great historical and spiritual significance.
In 2024, the Cova de Sant Ignasi Manresa Private Foundation applied for a grant to carry out this intervention, which was executed during the first half of the year. We are grateful for the support of the Barcelona Provincial Council, which helps preserve this emblematic site for the Society of Jesus and the city of Manresa.
The Antechamber, designed by Jesuit Martí Coronas in the early 20th century, provides access to the Coveta of Saint Ignatius. This space features colorful stained-glass windows in Venetian mosaic style, displaying phrases from the book of the Spiritual Exercises, as well as bronze reliefs by sculptor Flotats and mosaics depicting historical figures who experienced the Exercises.
The ceiling, inspired by the Catalan Renaissance style, and the bronze angels by Josep Llimona symbolize the prayer and penance of Saint Ignatius in this place. On the floor, the restored mosaic includes symbolic elements such as the Loyola family crest, a cannon representing the saint’s wound, and a large sunflower, a metaphor for Ignatius’ heart opening to Jesus.
This conservation effort helps keep the spiritual and artistic legacy of the Cave alive, thanks to the collaboration of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
